How to Download TikTok Videos on a Mac

Last updated:

Saving a TikTok on a Mac takes a browser and about ten seconds: copy the video URL, paste it at Snagtik, and a clean no-watermark MP4, an MP3 or photo slides land in your Downloads folder. The part people actually get stuck on is everything after that — Safari playing the video in a tab instead of saving it, files with long numeric names hiding in Finder, and getting the clip into the Photos app so it syncs to an iPhone. This guide covers the Mac-specific details. For the general Windows-and-Mac walkthrough, see downloading TikTok on PC and laptop.

  1. Copy the video URL. Open the video on tiktok.com in Safari or Chrome, click the address bar (Cmd+L) and copy it with Cmd+C. Share then Copy link works too.
  2. Paste it at Snagtik and pick a format. Open snagtik.com in a new tab (Cmd+T), paste with Cmd+V, click Download and choose no-watermark MP4, MP3 or photos.
  3. Find the file in Finder. The file saves to your Downloads folder. In Finder press Cmd+Option+L to jump there, or open the browser's download list: Cmd+Option+L in Safari, Cmd+Shift+J in Chrome.
  4. Import it into Photos (optional). Drag the MP4 into the Photos window, or use File then Import in Photos. With iCloud Photos on, the clip then appears on your iPhone and iPad too.

Safari or Chrome: what each one does

Both browsers save TikTok files the same way, but they show it differently. Safari puts a small download arrow in the toolbar; click it (or press Cmd+Option+L) to see recent downloads and click the magnifier icon to reveal a file in Finder. Chrome shows a download bubble in the toolbar and keeps a full history at Cmd+Shift+J. Firefox and other browsers behave much like Chrome. Whichever you use, the downloader is an ordinary web page, so nothing has to be installed and macOS never asks for special permissions.

One Safari quirk causes most of the confusion: for some MP4 links Safari opens a player tab instead of saving the file. Nothing went wrong, it is just showing you the video. Choose File then Save As while that tab is open, or go back and Control-click (right-click) the download button and pick Download Linked File. Chrome does the same thing now and then; right-click the playing video and choose Save video as.

Where the file lands and how to change it

By default every browser on macOS saves to /Users/yourname/Downloads. In Finder, Go then Downloads or Cmd+Option+L opens it, and the Downloads stack in the Dock gives you a one-click view. To send files somewhere else, such as a folder for clips:

BrowserWhere to change the download folder
SafariSafari then Settings then General then File download location
ChromeChrome then Settings then Downloads then Location (or turn on Ask where to save each file)
FirefoxFirefox then Settings then General then Files and Applications

If the folder looks empty, sort the Finder window by Date Added (View then Show View Options) so the newest file sits at the top. TikTok files often arrive with long numeric names, and sorting by name buries them. If you still can't see anything, the save did not finish; the where-downloads-go guide covers that case on every device.

Finder habits that save time

Select a file and press Space to preview it with Quick Look without opening any app. Press Return to rename it to something you will recognise later, such as the creator and topic. Finder tags (Control-click then Tags) let you group clips across folders, and a Smart Folder that filters on kind Movie and date added this week collects new downloads automatically. To play a clip in full, double-click it: QuickTime Player plays TikTok MP4s natively. If a file refuses to open, see what to do when a downloaded TikTok won't play.

Getting clips into Photos (and onto your iPhone)

The Photos app does not watch your Downloads folder, so you import clips yourself. Drag the MP4 from Finder onto the Photos window, or open Photos and choose File then Import. Depending on the Photos setting Importing: Copy items to the Photos library, the clip is either copied into the library (safe to delete the original in Downloads) or referenced where it sits (leave the original alone). With iCloud Photos on, the imported clip shows up on your iPhone and iPad after it syncs. For a single clip, AirDrop (Control-click the file then Share then AirDrop) is quicker and drops it straight into the iPhone Photos app.

Audio is different: an MP3 is not a photo, so keep it in a folder or add it to the Music app with File then Import. If you want that sound on your phone as a ringtone, the TikTok ringtone guide walks through the conversion.

Formats and the quality ceiling

Everything Snagtik offers works the same on macOS: watermark-free MP4 for editing in iMovie or Final Cut, the best quality available, MP3 audio, photo-mode slides with their background track, and Stories while they are still live. A Retina screen doesn't change the source. TikTok tops out at 1080p, and the 4K-myth page explains why nothing gets more. Snagtik never keeps a copy of your file: your browser fetches it from TikTok's CDN and writes it to your Mac.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to download TikToks on a Mac?

No. Safari, Chrome, Firefox and other Mac browsers all work. There is no Mac program, browser extension or command-line tool needed to save a video.

Where do TikTok downloads go on a Mac?

To the Downloads folder in your home folder unless you changed it. In Safari the setting is under Settings then General then File download location; in Chrome it is under Settings then Downloads.

Safari plays the video instead of downloading it. What do I do?

That is Safari showing the MP4 inline, not an error. Use File then Save As in that tab, or go back and Control-click the download button and pick Download Linked File.

How do I get a downloaded TikTok into the Photos app?

Drag the file from Finder into the Photos window, or open Photos and choose File then Import. If iCloud Photos is on, it syncs to your other Apple devices from there.

Is the quality different on a Mac?

No. You get the same file on every device, up to the 1080p the creator uploaded. No downloader gets more, because TikTok does not store more.
