How to Save a TikTok as Evidence (Harassment, Scams, Disputes)
Published · Updated
TL;DR
If a TikTok may matter later — harassment, a scam, a defamatory claim, a dispute — preserve it before you report it. Download the original file with Snagtik and don't edit it; record the link, handle, date and time; screenshot the profile, caption and key comments; store copies in two places. Then report to TikTok and, where needed, to the police or a lawyer.
Content on TikTok can vanish in minutes — deleted by the uploader, taken down after a report, or set to private. If you might need to show someone what was there, the order of operations matters: capture first, then act.
A five-step preservation checklist
- Download the original. Paste the link into Snagtik. Save the highest quality available (HD), plus the audio or images if they're the point. Don't trim, filter or re-export.
- Write down the facts. The full link, the creator's @handle, the date and time you viewed it (with your time zone), and the caption text.
- Screenshot the context. The video page with the handle visible, the profile page, and relevant comments. The comment viewer shows comments as a list that's easier to capture.
- Keep two copies. One on your device or computer, one in cloud storage. Don't rename the original file; put notes in a separate text file next to it.
- Report. Use TikTok's in-app report (long-press the video → Report), and contact police, a lawyer, your school or employer depending on the situation.
A simple evidence log
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Link | https://www.tiktok.com/@handle/video/7300000000000000000 |
| Handle / display name | @handle / "Display Name" |
| Seen on | 2026-10-07 21:14 (UTC+7) |
| Saved file | snagtik-handle-7300000000000000000.mp4 |
| Screenshots | profile.png, comments-1.png |
| Reported | TikTok report on 2026-10-07; police report no. … |
For extra rigour, record a fingerprint (hash) of the file — on a computer, shasum -a 256 file.mp4 (Mac/Linux) or certutil -hashfile file.mp4 SHA256 (Windows). If anyone later questions whether the file was altered, a matching hash shows it wasn't.
What a downloader can't capture
Private videos, friends-only posts, DMs and LIVE streams aren't reachable by any web tool (see private videos and LIVE). For those, screen-record on your own device while the content is visible to you, and screenshot the account details. Deleted content can't be recovered by anyone outside TikTok — which is why capturing early matters.
Not sure the link still works? The URL checker tells you if a post is public, private or already removed.
FAQ
Is a downloaded TikTok valid evidence?
It can be useful, but what counts as admissible depends on your country and the case. Preserve the original file unedited, record where and when you got it, and talk to a lawyer or the police about how they want it handed over. General information, not legal advice.
Should I download before or after reporting?
Before. Reported content may be removed quickly, and the uploader may delete it once they notice attention.
Can I save a private video or DM as evidence?
Downloaders can't reach private content. For messages and private posts sent to you, use screenshots and screen recordings on your own device, and TikTok's report tools.
Does saving the video alert the person who posted it?
No. Downloading a public video with a web tool doesn't notify the uploader.
